Don't be anxious

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God which transcends all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.
- Phillipians 4:6-7

Every time we worry, we are picturing a vision of the future from which God is absent. What God is actually promising us here is not that our lives will be worry free when we come to Jesus, or that prayer will always be easy. Instead, the promise is a life characterized by a supernatural peace despite any circumstance. And what precipitates this peace? Prayer in the face of worry.

I often find myself lying awake late at night unable to sleep because of this or that project. What this invariably means is that I am living my life as though Jesus is not Lord. Like he is not in charge and will not work on my behalf. We must pray fervently until we find peace and there is no promise that it will come immediately and easily, but the alternative is destroying our sanity for things we have no control over. Every worry is an opportunity for prayer. And why not? "You are worth more than many sparrows."
